  • About the Artist:
  • The Technique:

Born and raised in Israel, Tamara Baskin z’l moved the United States where she began her career in art. She had twenty years experience working in several mediums but was drawn to the art of fused glass production. Her emphasis was on creating elegant but functional pieces designed to celebrate Jewish life cycles. Tamara became a leader in both the Judaic and secular glass art guilds. Her legacy is carried on by her family’s commitment to build and expand on Tamara’s classic designs and techniques.

The technique of fusing glass goes back to biblical times. It is the process of joining together pieces of glass. Special pieces of glass are heated and then properly cooled, resulting in a solid, fused glass piece. Through this process, the artist can create patterns and designs in vivid, fluid colors. The sheet of fused glass is then formed into a vessel shape. In this process, called slumping, the glass is laid into or on top of a mold and heated to the point where it “slumps” to fit the mold. Once the glass reaches the desired form it must be cooled at just the right speed to prevent the glass from cracking. Vessel sinks require hours of painstaking labor, as the glass requires a minimum of two firings and 55 hours in the kiln.
