- About the Artist:
Tamara Baskin z’l was born and raised in Israel. She was a self taught artist with more than twenty years experience working in several mediums. Eventually, Tamara began working with fused glass where her emphasis was creating elegant yet functional designs celebrating Jewish life.
The technique of fusing glass goes back to biblical times. It is the process of joining together pieces of glass. Special pieces of glass are heated and then properly cooled, resulting in a solid, fused glass piece. Through this process, the artist can create patterns and designs in vivid, fluid colors. The sheet of fused glass is then formed into a vessel shape. In this process, called slumping, the glass is laid into or on top of a mold and heated to the point where it “slumps†to fit the mold. Once the glass reaches the desired form it must be cooled at just the right speed to prevent the glass from cracking. Vessel sinks require hours of painstaking labor, as the glass requires a minimum of two firings and 55 hours in the kiln.
